Foundations
Ground investigation, in-situ testing and laboratory classification can be used to inform suitable foundation solutions. Advice may cover straightforward foundation assessment as well as more complex consideration of settlement, ground improvement and buildability.

With the appropriate information to hand Geotech Nicholls Ltd make clear recommendations as to potential foundation solutions. This usually follows a graduated hierarchy from the shallowest to the deepest, with generally increasing cost implications.
Shallow strip footings are specified where light loads anticipated and ground conditions relatively benign. Where poor ground is present it may be feasible to utilise shallow raft type foundations or undertake some form of ground treatment or ground improvement (grouting, vibro-consolidation etc) to minimise the required amount of deep excavation.
Substantial loads and deep soft soils often require piled foundations to transfer loads from shallow depth to competent material at depth. Recommendations are made as to the anticipated types of pile (displacement / non displacement) and method of installation (driven / bored etc. taking into account ground conditions, access constraints and near neighbour sensitivity (noise / vibration etc).
Foundations layout plans can be prepared where ground conditions vary across a site to reflect, for example, the requirements of the NHBC with regard to shrink / swell prone clay soils and the presence of trees.
